This groundbreaking initiative by Hiyam Housing encompasses a 28,710 SF, 4-storey modular wood frame housing structure featuring 55 supportive affordable units, including 52 studios (6 accessible) and 3 accessible one-bedroom units. Completed within a remarkable 12-month timeframe, this project directly addresses the housing crisis faced by both the Sḵwxwú7mesh Nation and individuals from the East Hastings community. Notably, the innovative modular construction of 64’ double-hung interconnected suites ensure enhanced insulation between floors, minimizing sound and thermal energy transfer.
The project integrates culturally significant elements, including murals and a welcome totem pole designed by Squamish Nation artists, fostering community involvement and cultural revitalization. The installation of a cedar plank gate and metal steel cladding at the building's front creates a striking visual contrast, significantly enhancing its curb appeal. Moreover, the interior design incorporates cedar planks symbolizing strength and cultural heritage, with amenities such as a cultural office, commercial-grade kitchen, and community garden promoting cultural unity and well-being.
